Person at risk for being belligerent during a flight:
(1) drunk
(2) drug abuse (including a body packer carrying illegal drugs internally)
(3) psychotic or seriously mentally ill
(4) rage
Factors associated with increased legal risk:
(1) administering medications to a person without that person's consent
(2) administering medications to a person without knowledge of medical history or current conditions
(3) administering medications without a medical or advanced practice license
(4) using a strangle hold or other restraint that can cause serious or fatal injury
(5) applying physical restraint although untrained in how or when to use it
(6) being a physician or other person with assets attractive to a greedy lawyer
(7) failure to attempt to diffuse the situation first and to calm the person
Factors associated with a reduced risk:
(1) acting under instructions from the airplane captain
(2) acting to prevent life-threatening hazard to other passengers or damage to the plane
(3) acting in self-defense
