Description

Shub et al developed equations for predicting the left ventricular mass of adults based on age, gender and systolic blood pressure. The estimate is normalized to body surface area (BSA). The authors are from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester and in Jacksonville.

Data was derived by using echocardiography on a normal adult population.

Parameters:

(1) age

(2) systolic blood pressure

(3) gender

Gender

Left Ventricular Mass in grams per meter squared BSA

male

(0.34 * (systolic BP)) + (0.04 * (age in years)) + 58

female

(0.22 * (systolic BP)) + (0.26 * (age in years)) + 50

combined, male

(0.29 * (systolic BP)) + (0.16 * (age in years)) + 58

combined, female

(0.29 * (systolic BP)) + (0.16 * (age in years)) + 47
