Description

The Leaky Gut Syndrome refers to increased permeability of the gut mucosa allowing absorption of luminal contents.


Evidence for a leaky gut:

(1) increased absorption of inert and nonmetabolized compounds (mannitol, rhamnose, lactulose, chromium-51-EDTA)

(2) elevated fecal calprotectin

(3) bacteremia with gut bacteria

(4) endotoxemia

 

Conditions associated with a leaky gut:

(1) inflammatory bowel disease

(2) celiac disease

(3) chronic alcohol consumption and cirrhosis

(4) NSAIDs

(5) chronic kidney disease with uremia

(6) gastrointestinal infection

(7) SLE

(8) burns
