Description

Successful occupational health and safety programs require commitment by an organization's leadership.


Evidence of commitment by leadership:

(1) taking overall responsibility and accountability for prevention of work-related injuries

(2) taking overall responsibility and accountability for a safe and healthy workplace

(3) supporting the health and safety committee

(4) ensuring that safety objectives are defined and compatible with strategic plans for the organization

(5) integrating the requirements for occupational health and safety into the organization's business processes

(6) providing adequate resources for occupational health and safety programs

(7) communicating the importance of occupational health and safety

(8) making sure that the occupational health and safety program achieves its goals

(9) directing and supporting persons to make sure that the program is effective

(10) ensuring continual improvement

(11) promoting a safety culture

(12) protecting workers from reprisals for reporting hazards or problems

(13) making sure that workers participate in the program

• An additional statement ("supporting other relevant management roles to demonstrate their leadership as it applies to their areas of responsibility") is cryptic.

 

The more items that are present the greater the evidence of commitment by the organization's leadership.
