A child may be exposed to lead in toys, cheap jewelry or holiday ornaments. Although items known to have lead paint have been recalled, items not recalled or not detected may still be encountered.
Sources of lead:
(1) lead paint
(2) metal component
Risk factors for becoming intoxication:
(1) putting object in mouth
(2) swallowing the object
(3) high lead content
(4) purchase or exposure in a country with poor product controls
Differential diagnosis:
(1) other sources of lead
(2) exposure to other heavy metals in the toy or jewelry
