Lagophthalmos refers to an inability to close the eyelids voluntarily.
Complications:
(1) dryness of the exposed eye surface
(2) damage to the cornea
Conditions associated with lagophthalmos include:
(1) extreme proptosis
(2) scar tissue in the eyelids or retractor muscles
(3) seventh nerve palsy
(4) leprosy
(5) lesions of the cerebral cortex
(6) unwillingness to respond to a request to close the eyes, which may be psychological
(7) habitual sleeping with eyes open
