Hanafy et al reported a score for ulcerative colitis based on laboratory findings. This offers a noninvasive means of identifying a patient with active ulcerative colitis and to monitor response to therapy. The authors are from Zagazig University in Egypt.
Patient selection: ulcerative colitis
Parameters:
(1) mean platelet volume (MPV) in femtoliters
(2) neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR)
(3) ESR in mm at 1 hour
(4) fecal lactoferrin in micrograms per mL
(5) C-reactive protein (CRP) in mg/L
(6) stool WBC per high power field (hpf)
(7) stool RBC per hpf

Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 7
• A score >= 5 identifies 94% of patients with active ulcerative colitis.
Performance:
• The area under the ROC curve is 0.92.
