Gullu et al reported changes in laboratory markers seen in scorpion envenomation. These can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from Kahramanmaras Sutcu Imam University in Turkey.


Severe scorpion envenomation is associated with cardiotoxicity.

 

Scorpion species in region of study: Buthidae

 

Laboratory markers of severe scorpion envenomation:

(1) leukocytosis

(2) negative base excess

(3) elevated serum BNP in ng/L on admission (> 200 ng/L in study group)

(4) elevated serum BNP at 12 hours and 24 hours, with later peak possible in severe cardiac involvement

(5) elevated serum CK, on admission and through admission
