Description

Lee et al correlated laboratory markers with disease severity in non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis. These can help to monitor the patient over time. The authors are from Gyeongsang National University in South Korea.

Patient selection: bronchiectasis not due to cystic fibrosis

Measure of disease severity: Bronchiectasis Severity Index (BSI)

Laboratory markers of increased disease severity:

(1) elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration

(2) elevated platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR)

(3) low serum albumin concentration

(4) low hemoglobin (anemia)

(5) low serum total bilirubin concentration

(6) low serum uric acid concentration in males

(7) low serum creatinine concentration in males

A low serum albumin showed the strongest correlation with both the BSI and FACED scores.
