A patient with an organic academia (organic aciduria) may present with a number of laboratory abnormalities.


Laboratory findings that can be seen with an organic academia:

(1) metabolic acidosis with low serum bicarbonate concentration

(2) increased anion gap

(3) lactic acidosis

(4) ketosis and ketonuria

(5) hyperammonemia

(6) hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia

(7) hyperuricemia

(8) hypertriglyceridemia

liver (hepatitis)

abnormal liver function tests

pancreas (pancreatitis)

elevated serum amylase and lipase concentrations

skeletal muscle (myositis)

elevated CK and myoglobinuria

bone marrow

absolute neutropenia, anemia, thrombocytopenia
