Kyasanur Forest Fever is a viral infection seen in Kyasanur Forest is in India (in Karnataka, southeast of Goa).
Viral Genus: Flavivirus
Vector: hard tick (Haemaphysalis spinigera)
Infections may be biphasic, with the 2 phases separated by 1-3 weeks.
Clinical features:
(1) high fever with chills
(2) severe myalgia
(3) abdominal pain
(4) variable diarrhea
(5) headache
(6) variable alopecia
(7) hemorrhages (epistaxis, melena, hematemesis, bleeding gums)
(8) increased vascular permeability
(9) dehydration
(10) hypotension
(11) lymphadenopathy
(12) hepatosplenomegaly
(13) variable meningoencephalitis
Laboratory findings:
(1) thrombocytopenia
(2) neutropenia
(3) elevated liver function tests
(4) atypical lymphocytosis
Diagnosis is made using IgM-Elisa and/or PCR.
Mortality rate ranges from 0.9 to 33%.
Management is primarily supportive.
