Kudzu (Pueraria) Herbal Remedies for Hangover and Alcohol Abuse

Kudzu (Pueraria) can be used as an herbal remedy for hangover and for alcohol abuse.

Kudzu is a climbing vine which has been used in a variety of herbal remedies and traditional Chinese medicine.

Herbal products:

(1) Pueraria lobata (root-based)

(2) Pueraria flos (flower-based)

Herbal Product	Action	Use
Pueraria lobata	inhibits mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH2)	disulfiram-like ethanol aversion therapy
Pueraria flos	enhances acetaldehyde removal	hangover remedy

Adverse effects of kudzu root:

(1) hepatotoxicity

(2) chronic exposure to acetaldehyde with frequent use, which may be associated with certain tumors

(3) acute interstitial nephritis
