Koshina and Sugimoto reported an index for describing the height of the patella. The authors are from Yokohama City University in Japan.
Analysis: lateral X-ray with the knee flexed at 30 to 90 degrees
Points of reference:
(1) midpoint of the articular surface of the patella
(2) midpoint of a horizontal line through the proximal tibial physis (where the patella tendon inserts)
(3) midpoint of a horizontal line through the distal femoral physis (just above the epicondyle)
Parameters:
(1) length of line between points 1 and 2
(2) length of line between points 2 and 3
Koshino index =
= (length of line between points 1 and 2) / (length of line between points 2 and 3)
Interpretation:
• Normal range: 0.9 to 1.3.
