Kimmelstiel-Wilson syndrome describes a form of end-stage renal disease that can be seen in diabetics.

Clinical features of Kimmelstiel-Wilson syndrome include:

(1) diabetes mellitus

(2) hypertension

(3) severe proteinuria, sometimes with the nephrotic syndrome

(4) renal insufficiency

(5) variable diabetic retinopathy

A kidney biopsy typically shows nodular diabetic glomerulosclerosis. Mesangial nodules are called Kimmelstiel-Wilson lesions.
