Limmer et al reported the Keloid Area and Severity Index (KASI). This reports both activity and damage scores. The authors are from University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Weill Cornell Medicine and Limmer Dermatology (San Antonio).
Patient selection: keloid (a patient with moderate or severe keloid disease would seem to be the preferred patient rather than someone with one or two keloids).
Erythema of lesions is scored from 0 to 2:
(0) none (flesh colored) or no lesion
(1) pink
(2) red
Suppuration or crust of lesions is scored from 0 to 2:
(0) none or no lesion
(1) minimal
(2) moderate or severe
Sites examined:
(1) ears
(2) head and neck
(3) trunk
(4) arm and hand
(5) leg and foot
subscore A1 = SUM(points for the least severe erythema in each area)
subscore A2 = SUM(points for the most severe erythema in each area
subscore B1 = SUM(points for the least severe suppuration or crust in each area)
subscore B2 = SUM(points for the most severe suppuration or crust in each area
activity score =
= SUM(all of the subscores)
Interpretation:
• minimum activity score: 0
• maximum activity score: 40
• The higher the score the greater the activity.
