Description

Karelian Fever, Ockelbo Disease and Pogosta Disease are arboviral infections caused by the same virus.


 

Karelian Fever occurs on the Karelina isthmus, a strip of land between St Petersburg iand Finland.

 

Ockelbo Disease is named for a small town in central Sweden.

 

Pogosta Disease is described in Finland

 

Virus: Sindbis complex (alphavirus, Family Togaviridae)

 

Transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes

 

Clinical features may include:

(1) fever

(2) arthalgias

(3) an exanthem

(4) nephrotic syndrome

(5) encephalomyelitis

(6) thrombocytopenia with hemorrhage

 

These illnesses need to be distinguished from other arbovirual infections such as dengue fever.
