A jackhammer operator may develop degenerative arthritis of the upper extremity over time.
Patient selection: jackhammer operator
Joints affected may include:
(1) metacarpophalangeal
(2) wrist
(3) elbow
(4) shoulder
Synovium from hand and wrist may show calcification and/or bone fragments.
Risk factors:
(1) duration of jackhammer use
(2) other risk factors for degenerative arthritis
Some workers may also develop elements of a hand-arm vibration syndrome.
