Description

Kurosumi developed the J-score for reporting results of immunohistochemistry to demonstrate estrogen receptors in a woman with breast cancer. The author is from the Saitama Cancer Center in Japan.


 

Similarity to Allred score: Cells that stain are scored.

Difference from the Allred score: The intensity of staining is not scored.

Interpretation:

• A woman with a J-score of 3 should respond to hormone-directed therapy.

• A woman with an equivocal J score may or may not respond to hormone-directed therapy. The number of patients falling into the equivocal group is small.

• A woman with a low J-score may respond to aromatase inhibitors.

 

Limitations:

• Reproducible results requires strict adherence to the testing and scoring guidelines.
