Description

A CT scan can be helpful in the staging of a small bowel adenocarcinoma. However, Buckley et al identified a number of limitations. The authors are from Stanford University.

Patient selection: small bowel adenocarcinoma

Limits on staging:

(1) failure to detect mesenteric infiltration

(2) failure to detect metastases to lymph nodes

(3) failure to detect distant metastases

(4) misdiagnosis of lymphadenopathy

(5) misdiagnosis of distal lesions as metastases

Conditions that may be associated with errors:

(1) suboptimal study

(2) bowel perforation

(3) polyps and adenomas, including Peutz-Jegher syndrome

(4) small bowel obstruction

(5) Crohn's disease
