Description

Many occupational hazards and risk can be mitigated by following a sequential analysis.

Sequence:

(1) eliminate the hazard if possible

(2) substitute something less hazardous to something hazardous

(3) implement engineering controls or reorganize work to reduce risk

(4) implement administrative controls (training, rescheduling, interventions, inspections, etc)

(5) use personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect the worker

At the end of the sequence the worker should be at low risk for injury. If the risk code matrix shows that the hazard of serious injury to workers is still high then the task should not be performed until a way is found to make the risk acceptable.
