Description

The ISO has provided guidance for how an organization can prepare for an emergency. An organization that is prepared to respond to an emergency is better off.

An organization should develop of a planned response to possible emergency situations as part of hazard identification. The response should include:

(1) the ability to provide first aid

(2) the response to loss of utilities (water, electricity, communications)

(3) the response to hazards caused by the different emergencies

(4) establishment of command and control for the situation

The organization should:

(1) train its members about the plan

(2) communicate with workers about their duties and responsibilities

(3) communicate with others who might be affected (contractors, visitors, local government, etc)

Periodically the organization should conduct exercises simulating various emergencies. The performance during these exercises should be critically reviewed and adjustments made to the emergency plan as needed.

The policy describing the planned response should be readily available. The organization should retain documentation about the process and steps taken to ensure its successful implementation.
