Description

Although some of the evidence is contradictory, the presence of iron deficiency may increase the risk of a febrile seizure in a small child.

Variation in studies include:

(1) age range of the patients

(2) criteria for iron deficiency

(3) first vs subsequent febrile seizure

If a child has a febrile seizure then look for evidence of anemia.

If anemia is present, then evaluate the patient for iron deficiency.
