Description

The ionic strength of a solution can be calculated based on the molarities and valence of the solutes. The calculation must take into account all ionic species in the solution.

ionic strength for a solution =

= 0.5 * (((molarity of first solute) * ((valence of first solute)^2)) + ((molarity of second solute) * ((valence of second solute)^2)) + … ((molarity of final solute) * ((valence of final solute)^2)))
