The inverted takotsubo cardiomyopathy "flips" the portions of the left ventricular wall that are preserved or affected.
Clinical presentation: acute onset of heart failure due to left ventricular dysfunction
Features seen on echocardiography:
(1) preserved function of the apical segments of the left ventricle
(2) dysfunction of the mid-ventricular and/or basilar segments
Other causes of left ventricular dysfunction should be excluded (coronary artery disease, etc).
Precipitating factors may include:
(1) pheochromocytoma
(2) adrenergic beta-2 agonists
(3) scorpion envenomation
(4) subarachnoid hemorrhage
(5) acute trauma
