Intravenous infusion of iron has benefits in patients with both heart failure and iron deficiency.
Patient selection: heart failure patient with iron deficiency
A patient with metabolic iron deficiency may or may not be anemic.
Iron replacement may involve intravenous infusions of:
(1) ferric carboxymaltose
(2) ferric sucrose
Observed benefits of intravenous iron replacement:
(1) improved functional capacity
(2) improved quality of life
(3) less fatigue
(4) reduced hospital readmissions
The therapy did not reduce mortality.
While oral replacement improves iron stores it showed less of a benefit in increasing exercise capacity.
