Description

A patient with acute pancreatitis may develop fat necrosis at a number of extra-pancreatic sites including the fat of the bone marrow.

Clinical features:

(1) abdominal symptoms with evidence of pancreatitis

(2) bone and/or joint pain (polyarthritis)

(3) evidence of fat necrosis in the bone marrow on imaging studies or biopsy

Some patients may also develop panniculitis. The PPP syndrome refers to the presence of pancreatitis, panniculitis and polyarthritis.

In severe cases osteonecrosis may occur, resulting in pathological fractures.
