These can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from University of Sao Paulo, Federal University of Ouro Preto, and Instituto de Medicina Tropical de Sao Paulo.

Patient selection: visceral leishmaniasis

Predictors of severe disease:

(1) restrictive pattern on spirometry, consistent with interstitial pneumonitis

(2) hypoalbuminemia

Restrictive pattern on spirometry:

(2) decreased FVC

(3) decreased FEV1
