Description

Engel et al correlated the diagnosis of gallbladder disease with the sonographic measurement of gallbladder wall thickness. The authors are from U.S. Public Health Service Hospital in Seattle.

Indications for gallbladder ultrasonography: biliary colic, jaundice, or suspected neoplasm

If the gallbladder wall thickness is >= 3.5 mm, then almost all patients will have disease involving the gallbladder.

A gallbladder wall thickness less then 3.5 mm is indeterminate for disease. About 40% of gallbladders with wall thickness <= 2.5 mm will be associated with disease.
