Description

Sunk et al reported the Interphalangeal Osteoarthritis Radiographic Simplified (iOARS) score for identifying osteoarthritis in the joints between phalangeal bones in the hand. The authors are from the Medical University of Vienna.

Patient evaluation: hand radiographs

Osteoarthritis was considered to be present in an interphalangeal (IP) joint if one more of the following is present:

(1) joint space narrowing

(2) osteophytes

(3) subchondral sclerosis

Interphalangeal joints scored in Figure 5 indicate a total of 16 IP joints evaluated:

(1) distal interphalangeal joints (DIP) of the left digits 2 to 5

(2) distal interphalangeal joints (DIP) of the right digits 2 to 5

(3) proximal interphalangeal joints (PIP) of the right digits 2 to 5

(4) proximal interphalangeal joints (PIP) of the right digits 2 to 5

In the implementation the interphalangeal joints of the thumb was also included.
