Przybylski et al proposed criteria for Internet Gaming Disorder. The authors are from University of Oxford, Cardiff University, University of Reading and Kochi University (Japan).


Inclusion: non-gambling internet games

Exclusions: gambling and sexual internet sites

 

Criteria for Internet Gaming Disorder:

(1) preoccupation with internet gaming (dominant activity in daily life)

(2) experience withdrawal (irritability, anxiety, sadness) when not playing the internet game

(3) tolerance with increasing amounts of time spent in games

(4) unsuccessful attempts to control

(5) continued use despite recognition of adverse effects

(6) mislead others about the amount time spent on internet games

(7) used as an escape and for relief from negative feelings

(8) loss of interest in previous activities

(9) jeopardized or lost opportunities or relationships as a result of internet gaming
