Description

The International Red Cross (IRC) identified a number of injury patterns associated with antipersonnel mines.


Patient selection: injury from antipersonnel mine

 

Major patterns of injury:

(1) traumatic amputation of lower extremity, with less severe injuries elsewhere

(2) multiple fragment wounds (from flying debris)

(3) injuries to hands and/or face

 

Distribution of injuries:

(1) central (head, neck, chest, abdomen)

(2) genital injuries (perineum)

(3) upper limb injuries with or without traumatic amputation

(4) lower limb injuries with or without traumatic amputation

 

Complications:

(1) amputation (both initial traumatic and subsequent)

(2) loss of vision

(3) deafness

(4) nerve palsies

(5) urethral stricture
