Description

The International Ascites Club listed criteria for grading the severity of ascites associated with cirrhosis.


Features of the Ascites

Grade

requires ultrasound for diagnosis

1

moderate distention

2

marked and/or tense abdominal distention

3

 

The ascites is considered complicated if the patient has one or both of the following:

(1) infection of the ascites fluid

(2) hepatorenal syndrome

The ascites is termed uncomplicated if neither is present.
