Features of the Ascites
Grade
requires ultrasound for diagnosis

moderate distention

marked and/or tense abdominal distention

The ascites is considered complicated if the patient has one or both of the following:
(1) infection of the ascites fluid
(2) hepatorenal syndrome
The ascites is termed uncomplicated if neither is present.
