Description

Internal hernias can occur in relation to the broad ligament of a woman.


Contents: usually small bowel

 

Location: left or right broad ligament in women

 

Types:

(1) fenestra: both peritoneal layers of the broad ligament are penetrated

(2) pouch: only one peritoneal layer penetrated, with a sac-like defect

(3) hernia sac: neither peritoneal layer penetrated, with a sac-like defect

 

Clinical features:

(1) small bowel obstruction

(2) abdominal or pelvic pain

 

CT findings:

(1) cluster of dilated small bowel loops in the pelvic cavity

(2) located lateral to the uterus

(3) displacement of the rectosigmoid colon and uterus

(4) mesenteric vessels are seen at the broad ligament
