Description

A patient who hyperventilates can take steps to reverse the respiratory alkalosis and limit the clinical symptoms. Awareness of the processes involved can help the patient develop a sense of control and self-confidence.

Lie down in a quiet place for 15-30 minutes.

Rapidly control hypocapnia.

Rebreathe into a paper bag for 3-5 minutes.

(1) Breathing with the diaphragm and abdominal muscles.

(2) Breath holding for brief intervals.

Breathing patterns to avoid.

(1) Avoid frequent sighing.

(2) Avoid deep breathing.
