Insall-Salvati reported an index for describing the location of the patella in the knee joint.
Testing: lateral X-ray of the knee with knee flexed to 10 to 80 degrees
Parameters:
(1) length of the patella tendon (from distal edge of the patella to the insertion into the anterior tibia at the superior tibial epiphysis) in cm
(2) diagonal length of the patella (length of the articular surface) in cm
Insall-Salvati index =
= (length of the patella tendon) / (diagonal length of the patella)
Interpretation:
• Normal range: 0.8 to 1.2
