Description

Contact with horses can result in a number of injuries, some of which may be life threatening.


 

Types of injuries:

(1) falls while riding

(2) crush injuries

(2a) horse falls on or rolls over the rider

(2b) horse pushes human against stable wall

(3) kicks

(3a) kick from hind legs

(3b) kick from forelegs

(5) being stepped or stomped on by the horse

(6) biting (which may involve a limb, the neck or a nipple)

 

Additional injuries may occur from tree limbs, rocks and fences.

 

Complications from injuries:

(1) fractures

(2) thromboemboli, including fat

(3) hemorrhage

(4) blunt trauma to muscle, fat and other tissues

(5) concussion or other head injuries

(6) infections (tetanus, rabies, gas gangrene, etc)
