Description

Lacrosse may be associated with wide range of injuries.


Injuries tend to involve:

(1) lower extremity, especially the ankle

(2) torso

(3) shoulder and upper extremity

(4) head

(5) thumbs and fingers

 

Causes:

(1) stick

(2) high-speed ball impact

(3) collision

(4) sudden change in direction

(5) fall

 

Most common injuries:

(1) contusions

(2) sprains

(3) strains

(4) concussions

 

Serious injuries:

(1) laryngeal fracture

(2) blow to the back of the neck

(3) commotio cordis

 

Risk factors for injury:

(1) competition play

(2) lack of protective equipment

(3) inadequate officiation

(4) overly aggressive behavior
