Description

An electric iron may be associated with a number of injuries.


 

Types of injuries:

(1) thermal burn from direct contact

(2) fire

(3) electrocution

(4) head injury secondary to dropping on head

(5) fractures secondary to dropping on foot

 

Risk factors for injury:

(1) pulling on the cord when the iron is overhead

(2) long cord that becomes entangled

(3) defect in electric plug or cord

(4) use while standing in water

(5) intoxication

(6) being taken by surprise while using

(7) model lacking an automatic turnoff for when left unattended

(8) playing with the iron

(9) not being aware that an iron is still hot

(10) placing the iron at the edge of the ironing board or on an unstable surface

(11) earthquake or other room motion (use in a moving mobile home, boat, etc.)

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) physical abuse, especially involving small children
