Description

Stand-up paddle boarding can be the source of injury as well as enjoyment.


Common sites of injuries:

(1) shoulder or upper arm

(2) lower back

(3) elbow or forearm

 

Other sites: head and neck, wrist or hand, upper back, ribs, groin/buttock/hip, knee or lower leg, ankle or foot

 

Common types of injuries:

(1) muscle or tendon

(2) joint

(3) skin

 

Risk factors for injuries:

(1) endurance paddling (overuse)

(2) age > 46 years

(3) competitive paddling, including racing and sprint paddling

(4) paddling > 4.8 hours per week

(5) coming into contact with the board
