Description

A person using a single rope tree swing may be subject to a number of injuries. The person may be seriously injured even if the height of the fall is not that great.


 

Types of injuries:

(1) blunt trauma

(2) impalement

(3) water inhalation (if the swing is over water)

 

Types of blunt injuries:

(1) head trauma

(2) vertebral fractures

(3) pelvic fracture

(4) long bone fractures

(5) splenic rupture

 

Risk factors for injury:

(1) male gender

(2) intoxication

(3) behaving recklessly or taking a dare

(4) defective swing material or point of attachment

(5) items at either end of the swing trajectory

(6) material below where the person is swinging

(7) loss of grip due to moisture or other cause

(8) greater height (although serious injuries can occur at any height)
