An injection site injury may be misdiagnosed as a pressure ulcer, and vice versa.
The buttocks is the site where an injection site injury and pressure ulcer can be confused.
A site of injection injury is more likely to become a pressure ulcer since the tissue is already injured. The risk may be increased for:
(1) panniculitis
(2) abscess or cellulitis
(3) vasoconstricting drug with ischemia
Barriers to diagnosis:
(1) patient transfer
(2) undocumented injection
(3) patient unable to give a history (coma, sedation, etc)
(4) injection of a drug of abuse
