Description

Potassium nitrate (saltpeter) is present today in many products in small amounts, including toothpaste. In the past saltpeter was used in the production of gunpowder and as a food preservative. During the Middle Ages a variety of potions incorporated gunpowder. Later there was rumor that saltpeter reduced the male sex drive.


Potassium nitrate may be taken for self-treatment of:

(1) priapism

(2) over-active libido

(3) asthma

 

There is no known beneficial effect of taking saltpeter.

 

Complications of a large ingestion of potassium nitrate:

(1) methemoglobinemia

(2) hyperkalemia

(3) pseudo-elevated serum bicarbonate (due to laboratory test interference)
