De Pralormo et al reported adverse effects associated with ingestion of bar soap. The authors are from the Poison Control Centrer at CHU Angers in France.
Persons at risk:
(1) demented adult
(2) psychiatric patient
(3) small child
Mechanisms of injury may include:
(1) alkaline pH (9-12)
(2) from chemical additives
(3) allergy
Clinical findings after ingestion:
(1) labial edema
(2) oropharyngeal irritation
(3) salivation
(4) vomiting
(5) cough
(6) aspiration pneumonia
Severe cases can be fatal.
Risk factors for a severe episode:
(1) large amount of soap ingested
(2) vomiting with aspiration
