Francisella philomiragia is a halophilic bacteria that can be found in brackish waters. It is rarely encountered clinically, typically as a serious infection in an immunocompromised patient.

Features of Francisella philomiragia: Gram-negative coccobacillus with a spherical shape of varying sizes
Location found: brackish waters such as Chesapeake Bay; with global distribution.
Exposures may include boating, swimming and mud baths.
Susceptible patients include:
(1) chronic granulomatous disease (CGD)
(2) transplant recipient
(3) other immunocompromised patients
(4) diabetes mellitus
Infections may include:
(1) bacteremia
(2) pneumonia or pulmonary nodules
(3) cellulitis
The prognosis is poor if appropriate therapy is not started promptly.
