Kalamiella piersonii is rarely encountered in human disease. It can cause infection in immunocompromised patients.
Classification: Gram-negative bacteria in Enterobacterales in Erwiniaceae family
Features:
(1) able to breakdown urea and to cause infections in the urinary tract
(2) has been associated with sepsis
(3) resistance to penicillins and ceftazidime, with a beta-lactamase gene
(4) can cause opportunistic infection in susceptible hosts
(5) can form biofilms
Identification may be challenging, and it may be misidentified as a related organism. It may show a pattern similar to Erwinia species.
