Description

A number of acute infections causing cerebellitis may be associated with cerebellar ataxia.


 

Viral infections associated with acute cerebellar ataxia:

(1) Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease

(2) Enterovirus 71

(3) Epstein-Barr

(4) Hepatitis A

(5) Herpes simplex virus, Type 1

(6) Human Herpesvirus 6

(7) Measles

(8) Mumps

(9) Parvovirus B19

(10) Rotavirus

(11) Rubella

(12) Varicella-Zoster

 

Bacteria associated with acute cerebellar ataxia:

(1) Salmonella species (typhoid fever)

(2) Lyme disease (Borrelia)

 

Other organisms associated with acute cerebellar ataxia:

(1) Mycoplasma

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) postinfectious cerebellitis

(2) ataxia associated with chronic infection
