Description

Matos et al developed a risk score for predicting infection in a patient with an open fracture. This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Bahian School of Medicine and Public Health, Roberto Santos General Hospital and Feira de Santana State University in Brazil.

Patient selection: open fracture

Parameters:

(1) Gustilo classification of open fractures

(2) Tscherne classification for an open fracture

(3) number of hours with open wound

= SUM(points for all 3 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 3

• maximum score: 12

• The higher the score the greater the risk for infection.

Performance:

• The sensitivity was 84% and specificity 54%.

• The area under the ROC curve was 0.71.
