An infection hotspot is an area of increased risk for or occurrence of an infectious disease.
The hotspot can be seen visually by displaying the number of cases at sites throughout a map of the region. A high density of cases indicates a hotspot.
The term hotspot may be used in other situations as a descriptor - homicides, suicides, homelessness, etc.
Types of infection-related hotspots:
(1) based on disease prevalence
(2) based on disease transmission
(3) based on emergence of some feature (drug-resistance, etc)
A hotspot can be a place for interventions to reduce the threat posed by increased risk.
