Description

Leff et al reported acute conditions that are difficult to manage for an elderly patient being treated at home. These can help to identify a patient who can be treated in a home hospital. The authors are from Johns Hopkins University.

Patient selection: age >= 65 years with acute medical illness

Ineligibility criteria for home hospital:

(1) pulmonary congestion associated with ischemic chest pain (OR 6.9)

(2) presence of an acute, coexisting illness requiring hospitalization independent of the target condition (OR 2.7)

(3) significant pulmonary congestion after initial treatment (OR 14.4)

A patient with one or more of these conditions should be admitted to the hospital for care.
