Description

Ekfeldt et al developed a tooth wear index to evaluate the extent of incisal and occlusal wear in a patient. This can be used to evaluate a patient initially and to monitor the patient over time. The authors are from Gothenburg University and the Institute of Postgraduate Dental Education in Sweden.

Appearance

Grade of Tooth Wear

no wear or negligible wear of enamel

0

obvious wear of enamel or wear through the enamel to the dentin in single spots

1

wear to the dentin in up to one third of the crown height

2

wear to the dentin in over one third of the crown height, or excessive wear of dental restorative material in over one third of the crown height

3

where:

• In the implementation I added wear of dental restorative material to grades 1 and 2 (only mentioned with grade 3 in the text.

individual incisal and occlusal tooth wear index =

= ((10 * (number of teeth with grade 1 wear)) + (30 * (number of teeth with grade 2 wear)) + (100 * (number of teeth with grade 3 wear))) / ((number of teeth with grade 0 wear) + (number of teeth with grade 1 wear) + (number of teeth with grade 2 wear) + (number of teeth with grade 3 wear))

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 100

• The higher the score, the more severe the dental wear and erosion.
